Water Our Life Blood

Water Our Life Blood

Water may be a tiny dew drop, an ice cube, a brook, puddle, stream, river, a water fall or an enormous ocean, what ever the formation may be water has its own fascination. This is one of the tree main requirements of man, for the survival of man and animals.
Being a tiny island we are blessed, with water. Some how or other we  can quench our thirst. In Sri Lanka we often get rain and we enjoy abundance of lush green and vegetation. Even though in dry seasons where there is no rain for a long period we experience the harshness of drought and also tend to understand the value of water. Ancient rulers of Sri Lanka had thoroughly understood the value of this precious element.

There were very sensible enough to build so many tanks to conserve the water for the benefit of the country. Being an agricultural country we had a fine system of water management. Once the great king Prakramabahu the Great said “not a single drop of rain should reach the sea without man making some use of it”. Though water is a versatile friend of human sometimes it causes great damage to human when it is in  fury in the form of flood. Electricity often fails and people face great inconvenience. In affected villages life becomes much harder. Huts and their belongings are destroyed and the crops in the field affected. Trees are uprooted and cattle get drowned and killed. Thus huge volume of excess water plays havoc when it is infuriated.

Anyway water is really a wealth to be preserved. It should not go waste. It’s very pathetic still some people have not realize the value of this natural resource. Too much of felling trees also another harmful act for the scarcity of water. So let’s give this a thought to safe guard water for the survival of man and for the generation to come.
